Aircon installation cost in Singapore: System 1, 2 and 3 compared
By Jacky Lee, Editor · Updated 2026-09-22
Buying a new aircon in Singapore usually means choosing between a System 1, 2, 3 or 4 setup, a brand, a BTU rating and an installer, all at once. The advertised price looks simple, but the final bill depends on what the installation includes. Here is how the numbers stack up and where quotes tend to diverge.
Figures are taken from prices published on contractor websites in the Yishun listings we scanned. They are promotional snapshots, so confirm the current price with each installer.
Advertised prices by system
| Setup | What it is | Advertised range seen |
|---|---|---|
| System 1 | One outdoor unit, one indoor unit (9,000 BTU) | About $1,200 to $1,450 |
| System 2 | One outdoor unit, two indoor units | About $2,300 to $2,700 |
| System 3 | One outdoor unit, three indoor units | About $3,500 to $3,800 |
| System 4 | One outdoor unit, four indoor units | About $4,750 in the one listing that shows it |
These generally include the units and a standard installation. Systems 2 to 4 are multi-split setups, where one outdoor unit feeds several indoor units.
System 1 or a multi-split?
A multi-split saves outdoor space, which matters in small HDB flats where the A/C ledge only fits so much. The trade-off is that all indoor units depend on one outdoor unit. If it fails, every room loses cooling until it is repaired. Separate System 1 units cost more in installation and take more outdoor space, but a fault in one does not affect the others.
Multi-split systems also have rules about which indoor-unit sizes pair with which outdoor unit, so settle your BTU choices with the installer before you commit.
What the standard install usually covers
Look for a written list. A typical standard install covers mounting the indoor unit, a set length of copper piping, drainage, and commissioning. Items that commonly cost extra:
- Piping beyond the included length
- Concealing pipes in a ceiling bulkhead
- New electrical points or isolators
- Extra-high or awkward bracket work
- Removing and disposing of an old unit
- Hacking or core drilling
Ask each installer for their price on these before comparing totals. Two quotes that look $150 apart can easily reverse once extras are counted.

Brand, inverter and running cost
Within the same System, price differences come from brand, inverter technology and the number of energy ticks. A higher-tick inverter model costs more upfront and uses less electricity. How much that saves depends on how many hours you run it, so work it out for your own use rather than relying on a general claim.
Where reviewers see problems
Complaints in the corpus about installation are specific rather than general: dust and debris left behind, finishing and touch-up work not completed, a smell after installation, and piping leaks that later became disputed. Praise runs to installers who make a site visit and give a transparent quote before work starts, protect floors and furniture, and clean up afterwards. These are things to check, not to assume. Once you have picked an installer, the installation day checklist covers what to prepare and what to inspect before you pay the balance.
Timing the purchase
Promotions on aircon systems change through the year, and the sale prices in the listings often sit beside a higher regular price. A sale price is only useful if the scope matches what you need. If you are renovating, get the quote before the carpentry plan is fixed, because bulkheads and pipe routes affect both the look and the final price.
If you are replacing a working unit just because it is old, price the replacement against the cost of keeping the existing one serviced for another year or two. Neither choice is always right, and the numbers for your own flat decide it.
How to get to a fair comparison
- Ask three installers to quote the same brand, model and BTU.
- Request the total with every extra itemised.
- Confirm the warranty on both the equipment and the workmanship.
- Ask who handles warranty claims if something goes wrong.

Common questions
- How much does a System 1 aircon cost with installation?
- In the Yishun listings we scanned, single-split 9,000 BTU systems from well-known brands were advertised at roughly $1,200 to $1,450 with standard installation. Brand, BTU rating and promotions move the figure.
- What is the price difference between System 2 and System 3?
- Advertised System 2 packages in the listings ran about $2,300 to $2,700, and System 3 packages about $3,500 to $3,800. A multi-split shares one outdoor unit, so the gap reflects the extra indoor unit and a larger condenser.
- Is installation included in the advertised price?
- Often yes for standard installs, but check what 'standard' means. Extra piping length, bracket work, concealing pipes and electrical points are commonly charged separately.
- Should I get quotes before or after renovation starts?
- Before, if you can. Piping routes, power points and condensate drainage are easier to plan while walls and ceilings are still open.
