How the score works

Every business gets a composite score from 0 to 100. It is built from five measured signals, each with a fixed weight. Here they are, heaviest first.

SignalWeightWhat it measures
Sentiment28%A synthesis of recent review themes: praise versus complaints
Rating26%The Google aggregate star rating
Volume20%How many reviews, log-scaled
Completeness16%Whether phone, website, hours and address are listed
Recency10%How recently customers reviewed

Why sentiment carries the most weight

A star average hides patterns. Two aircon contractors can both sit at 4.5 stars, yet one collects repeated complaints about the same thing: a technician who arrives late, a leak that returns after a service, a quote that grows on the day. The other gets scattered, unrelated gripes. The average looks identical. Reading what recent reviews actually say is the only way to catch the difference, so sentiment gets the biggest share.

Why each signal matters when hiring

  • Sentiment: shows whether problems repeat. For servicing, repair and installation, repeat issues matter more than one bad day.
  • Rating: a useful summary of overall satisfaction across many customers, and a sensible starting filter.
  • Volume: we log-scale it so a handful of reviews does not equal hundreds. Going from 5 to 50 reviews counts for much more than going from 500 to 545.
  • Completeness: a listed phone number, website, opening hours and address make a business easier to contact and check before you book.
  • Recency: a contractor's service can change. Recent reviews tell you how they work now, not three years ago.

Honest limits

No score replaces a call to the contractor. Businesses with few recent reviews get a low-confidence score, and we label them as such instead of presenting the number as settled. We synthesise reviews rather than republishing them, and we link out to Google so you can read the source yourself. Our data comes from public review information and public business details, so anything a business has not made public, or that customers have not written about, is not in the score.

Scores are earned, never edited

Scores come from this rubric and this data only. Nobody edits a score by hand. Paid placement, when it exists, is always labelled and never changes the score. If a list's picks or order were editor-reviewed, that list says so on the page itself. For an example of a ranked list, see our best aircon repair list, or start from the home page.

How we keep it current

Data is refreshed monthly. Each listing carries a "last verified" stamp, so you can see when we last checked it. If you spot something out of date, or you run a listed business and want to correct a detail, email hello@sgheartlandguides.com. Jacky Lee and the team review corrections against public data.

FAQ

Can a business pay to improve its score?
No. Scores come only from the published rubric and public data. Paid placement, when it exists, is always labelled and never changes the score.
What does a low-confidence label mean?
The business has few recent reviews, so its score rests on thin evidence. We still show it, but we flag it so you treat the number with care and read the Google reviews yourself.
Do you copy customer reviews onto the site?
No. We synthesise review themes into our sentiment signal and link out to Google, where the original reviews live.
How often is the data updated?
Monthly. Each listing has a last verified stamp showing when it was last checked.
