Aircon replacement: when to replace instead of repair
Replacing an aircon is different from a first-time install. The old system has to be dismantled, the gas recovered, and the existing piping and drainage checked before the new unit goes in.
Replacement often makes sense when:
- The unit is old and needs repeated repairs
- The compressor has failed
- It uses an older refrigerant that is harder to service
- Your electricity bills have climbed noticeably
Ask the contractor whether the existing pipes can be reused or need replacing, and whether old unit disposal is included in the quote.
What it costs
Cost depends on the number of units, system type (single split or multi-split), brand, piping length, and whether old units are removed and disposed of. Compare quotes that list these items separately.

FAQ
- Should I repair or replace my aircon?
- If the fault is minor, repair. If the compressor is dead or repairs keep recurring on an old unit, replacement is usually the better choice.
- Do contractors remove the old aircon?
- Many do as part of the job. Confirm removal and disposal in writing.
- Can old piping be reused?
- Sometimes, if it is clean and compatible with the new unit's refrigerant. The installer should check it.
