What is R410A refrigerant?

R410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant blend, sold under names such as Puron, that circulates through an air conditioner to move heat from inside a room to outside. It is the standard refrigerant in many split-system and multi-split units installed in Singapore homes and offices over the past couple of decades.

R410A is a blend of two hydrofluorocarbon gases, difluoromethane and pentafluoroethane, used as the working fluid in a vapour-compression air conditioner. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air at the evaporator coil, carries it through the copper pipework, and releases it at the outdoor condenser unit. It is sold under trade names such as Puron, and you will sometimes see it written as R-410A or R 410A on nameplates and service labels.

In an existing unit, the refrigerant is sealed inside the system and rarely needs topping up unless there is a leak. You will usually find the R410A designation on the rating plate of the outdoor condenser, on the service valve labels, or in the installer's paperwork. Many split-system and multi-split units fitted in HDB flats, condominiums and landed homes across Yishun from the late 2000s onward were designed around this refrigerant, so it is common in older-than-ten-year installations that are still running.

Why it matters: R410A operates at higher pressures than the older R22 it replaced, so the compressor, valves and pipes are built for those pressures. Technicians cannot simply swap in a different gas without checking compatibility, and mixing refrigerants in one system causes problems. R410A also has a high global warming potential, which is why it is being phased down under international agreements, and newer equipment is moving to alternatives such as R32. If your unit uses R410A, a technician working on it will need the correct gauges and recovery equipment. A certified technician confirms the refrigerant type from the nameplate before any service work begins.
