What is R32 refrigerant?

R32 is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant, chemically difluoromethane, used to move heat in newer air conditioning systems. It has a lower global warming potential than R410A, the refrigerant it has largely replaced in new residential units.

R32 is a single-component hydrofluorocarbon, chemically known as difluoromethane. Like every refrigerant, it circulates through a sealed system, absorbing heat from indoor air in the evaporator and releasing it outdoors at the condenser. What sets it apart is its environmental profile: R32 has a global warming potential (GWP) of about 675, compared with roughly 2,088 for R410A, the blend it succeeded in most new residential units.

You will find R32 in many newer split-type and multi-split air conditioners sold and installed in Singapore, including units in Yishun's HDB flats and private condominiums. Manufacturers moved to it partly because it needs a smaller refrigerant charge for the same cooling output, and because it is a single substance rather than a blend, which makes it simpler to recover and recycle during servicing.

The practical difference matters for anyone working on these systems. R32 operates at higher pressures than R410A, so older gauges, hoses, and service tools rated only for R410A are not suitable. R32 is also mildly flammable (classed A2L), which is why installation and servicing rules call for trained technicians and proper ventilation. Refrigerant type is printed on the unit's nameplate, and a technician should confirm it before any repair or top-up.

If you are looking for a technician who works on R32 systems, the aircon repair providers listed in this directory are a good starting point.
