What is inverter aircon?

An inverter air conditioner uses a variable-speed compressor that ramps its output up or down to match the room's cooling needs. A non-inverter (fixed-speed) unit instead runs its compressor fully on or fully off.

An inverter aircon is an air conditioning unit whose compressor runs at a variable speed. An inverter circuit converts the incoming mains power into a controllable frequency, so the compressor can speed up when the room is hot and slow down once the set temperature is reached. The unit keeps running at a low, steady output rather than cycling on and off.

A non-inverter unit, often called a fixed-speed model, works differently. Its compressor runs at one set speed and switches fully on until the room cools, then shuts off until the temperature drifts back up. That start-stop cycle causes bigger swings in room temperature and more electrical surges at each restart.

The practical difference is in how the unit behaves day to day. Inverter units tend to hold a steadier temperature and run quieter at low load, which suits bedrooms and living rooms in Yishun flats that are occupied for long hours. Fixed-speed units are simpler in design and are still common in older installations and in rooms where the aircon runs only occasionally.

When you look at the specifications of a unit, the inverter label tells you the compressor is variable-speed. If you are looking for a contractor who handles these systems, the aircon installation providers listed in this directory cover both inverter and non-inverter work.
