What is a gas top-up?

A gas top-up is the process of adding refrigerant to an air conditioning system that has lost some of its charge. Because refrigerant is sealed in a closed circuit, a system that needs topping up usually has a leak somewhere.

A gas top-up is when a technician adds refrigerant to an air conditioner that has run low. Split units, multi-split systems and ducted systems in HDB flats and landed homes in Yishun all rely on a sealed refrigerant circuit that moves heat from indoors to outdoors. That circuit is not supposed to use up its refrigerant, so the charge should stay at the level the manufacturer set when the unit was installed.

When a unit is short on gas, the usual cause is a leak at a joint, a flare fitting, the indoor coil or the outdoor condenser. Corrosion, vibration and old pipe insulation can all open a small path for refrigerant to escape, often slowly. Symptoms include weak cooling, a coil that ices over, or a compressor that runs longer than it should. A top-up restores the charge and may bring cooling back for a while, but the gas will keep escaping until the leak is found and sealed.

This is why a top-up matters beyond the refrigerant itself. Running a system low on gas makes the compressor work harder and can shorten its life. Repeated top-ups without a leak check mean paying for the same gas again and again. A proper service looks for the leak, repairs it, then checks pressures and charge against the unit's specification before the system is closed up.
