What is a compressor?

A compressor is the component in an air conditioning system that pressurises refrigerant gas and pushes it around the closed loop between the indoor and outdoor units. Without it, the refrigerant cannot absorb heat indoors or release it outside.

The compressor is the pump at the centre of an air conditioning system. It takes low-pressure refrigerant gas from the evaporator (the coil inside the room unit) and squeezes it into a hot, high-pressure gas. That compressed gas then flows to the condenser, usually the coil in the outdoor unit, where it releases its heat to the outside air and turns back into a liquid.

Refrigerant only cools because it is repeatedly changed between gas and liquid under controlled pressure. The compressor sets that pressure difference and keeps the refrigerant moving through the expansion valve and back to the indoor coil, where it picks up heat again. In a split-type unit common in Singapore homes and shophouses, the compressor sits inside the outdoor condensing unit, and its condition largely determines whether the system can hold a steady temperature.

Because it is the most mechanically demanding part of the system, the compressor is also the most expensive component to replace. Faults in it often show up as weak cooling, unusual noise, or a unit that trips its breaker. Technicians in areas such as Yishun usually check refrigerant pressures and electrical draw to judge whether a compressor is working properly. You can find contractors who handle these checks through our aircon repair providers listings.

In short, the compressor is what makes the refrigerant cycle work. If it stops or loses efficiency, the rest of the system cannot cool the room.
